Spotlight on: Newcastle Adult Transplant Teams

Welcome back to another exciting edition of “Spotlight On!” This week, we’re delighted to feature Daymon, the dedicated Team Manager of the Newcastle Adult Transplant Team, who was recently involved with the prestigious British Transplant Games.

The British Transplant Games, a flagship event organised by the charity Transplant Sport, have been celebrating the gift of life for over 40 years. The Games trace their origins back to 1978 when the first-ever “Transplant Olympics” were held in Portsmouth. That inaugural event was a remarkable gathering, bringing together transplant recipients and living donors together from around the globe, including teams from France, Greece, and the USA. The competitors, affectionately known as “99 blooming miracles,” set the stage for what would become an annual celebration of resilience and community.

Since then, the Games have grown tremendously, traveling to different cities across the UK each year. They provide a platform for transplant recipients and living donors of all ages to showcase their athletic abilities, bond with others who have undergone similar journeys, and most importantly, raise awareness about the life-saving importance of organ donation.

When Daymon reached out to us, requesting branded water bottles for the Newcastle Adult Transplant Team, we were thrilled to support such an inspiring cause. We were eager to hear more about the team’s experience at the Games, the impact of the event, and how our water bottles played a role in their journey. So, we asked him a couple of questions about the water bottles and the event itself, and we’re excited to share his insights with you.

 

Can you take us on a journey through your event, sharing its mission and the impact you aimed to achieve?

The British Transplant Games is so much more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of life and the incredible gift of organ donation. Our mission is to bring together transplant recipients and living donors from all walks of life, providing them with an opportunity to compete, connect, and share their unique journeys.

The Games offer a space where participants can meet others who have faced similar challenges, creating a strong sense of community and mutual support. It’s a time to celebrate the resilience and strength of the human spirit, as well as the new lives we’ve been granted through the generosity of our donors.

At the heart of the event is a profound sense of gratitude. The Games serve as a poignant reminder of the donors who made our second chance at life possible. We come together not only to compete but to honour and remember these incredible individuals, ensuring their legacy lives on through our stories and achievements.

Through this event, we also aim to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation, inspiring others to consider becoming donors and helping to save lives. The impact of the British Transplant Games is felt far beyond the event itself; it’s a movement that highlights the life-changing power of organ donation and the enduring connections it creates.

 

What were the key benchmarks you aimed for to declare your event a roaring success?

Our primary benchmark for success was spreading the word about the critical importance of organ donation and encouraging people to share their donation wishes with loved ones. We believe that increasing awareness and fostering conversations about organ donation are vital steps in saving lives, and that was at the core of our mission for the event.

While raising awareness was our main goal, we also set our sights on team performance. The medals we won were a testament to the hard work, determination, and spirit of our team members, and they certainly added to the sense of accomplishment we felt. In total, our team proudly brought home 32 medals—13 Gold, 10 Silver, and 9 Bronze. These achievements not only highlighted our athletes’ incredible talents but also underscored the strength and resilience of transplant recipients.

 

How did you establish a partnership with Hotline, making them the ideal choice to support your event with promotional items?

While I was browsing the internet for team merchandise, I came across Hotline’s website and was immediately impressed by the quality and variety of their products. Their offerings looked exceptional and seemed like a great fit for our needs. Knowing that promotional items would add significant value to our event, I decided to reach out to Hotline directly. Given the size of our order, I inquired about the possibility of receiving a donation of water bottles or, alternatively, a discount for a bulk purchase. My approach was a bit bold, but I was hopeful that Hotline would see the potential in partnering with us.

 

What inspired you to choose water bottles as your primary promotional product, and what specific features made them particularly appealing to you?

Given that we were participating in a sports event, we felt that water bottles were the most practical and relevant choice for our promotional product. Not only are they essential for keeping participants hydrated, but they also serve as a lasting reminder of the event. We were particularly drawn to the idea of having our logo displayed prominently alongside Hotline’s branding. The quality of the water bottles we received exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of durability and design that we couldn’t have asked for from any other supplier. By sparking discussions about the Transplant Games and organ donation, these items continue to amplify awareness long after the event has concluded, helping to further the mission of the charity we support.

 

Now that the event has concluded, what key insights have you gathered that could pave the way for future endeavours?

This year’s British Transplant Games had nearly 1,000 athletes competing, with a total of 2,000 participants including supporters, highlighting the event’s increasing success and influence. One key insight we’ve gained is the strong potential for continued growth, both in terms of athlete participation and public engagement. The positive reception and success of this year’s games have reinforced our belief that the event can expand even further in the coming years. Additionally, with increased visibility and the momentum we’ve built, we see a clear pathway to attracting more national media attention, which will not only elevate the profile of the games but also amplify awareness of organ donation on a broader scale. These insights will be crucial as we plan future events, aiming to make the British Transplant Games an even more significant and widely recognised platform.
