Hope Against Cancer is a charitable organisation committed to advancing cancer research and treatment. Through collaborations with hospitals and universities, the charity funds over 100 original research projects, aiming to uncover new insights into cancer. Additionally, Hope Against Cancer has been instrumental in establishing and operating Leicester’s renowned Hope Cancer Trials Centre, providing care to over 30,000 patients since 2012. The organisation also supports the implementation of new cancer treatments and the development of future cancer specialists. With its comprehensive approach, Hope Against Cancer strives to make significant progress in the fight against cancer.

We had the opportunity to chat with John, a dedicated member of the charity, to delve into the background of the organisation and understand why they chose to connect with Hotline.

Can you tell us the story behind Hope Against Cancer funding cancer trials?

Hope Against Cancer began its journey in 2003, founded by Allison Wilson CBE with a clear mission: to support local cancer research that directly benefits our community. Over the years, our efforts have been nothing short of remarkable. Within a decade, we raised an impressive £3 million, enabling us to establish the Hope Clinical Trials Unit in 2012 and sponsor 32 PhD fellowships. This marked a significant milestone in providing access to cutting-edge treatments for our local residents and bolstering research expertise in our area.

Now, as we celebrate our 21st year, our fundraising efforts have surpassed £8 million. In 2021, we embarked on a substantial expansion of the Trials Unit, transforming it into the esteemed Hope Cancer Trials Centre. Renowned for its excellence and compassionate care, the Centre has garnered an international reputation.

While our primary focus remains on supporting our local community in Leicestershire and Rutland, the impact of our research extends far beyond. We are committed to sharing our findings with the wider scientific community, contributing to the national and international efforts to combat cancer.

How did Hope Against Cancer make use of the bags? Was there a specific goal or strategy behind your marketing approach?

These bags are not part of a campaign in themselves, and they are far from ordinary accessories – they’re a lifeline for individuals undergoing treatment at the Hope Cancer Trials Centre. Dealing with cancer is stressful enough without the added burden of scrambling for documents and information at the last minute. With these bags, all essential patient paperwork is conveniently housed in one place, ensuring that appointments proceed smoothly and reducing unnecessary stress. They serve as the central hub where dedicated staff gather all vital patient information, streamlining the process for everyone involved.

We’d love to hear about your experience with Hotline, especially regarding the sponsorship process.

Hotline generously provided 300 black branded conference bags featuring our logo at no cost to us. While these bags aren’t directly integrated into our ongoing marketing strategy since they’re exclusively given to potentially vulnerable individuals, their sponsorship offers an invaluable narrative. The support from Hotline sets a prime example for other businesses to follow suit, whether it’s sponsoring Hope Against Cancer events, runner’s t-shirts, and more in the future.

Can you tell us about how the donation of 300 branded bags by Hotline came about?

The patient bags have become a real favourite at our centre. When we realised, we were running low and needed more, our office manager wasted no time reaching out to Hotline for assistance. To our surprise, within just an hour, Oliver Galpin responded with an incredibly generous offer: 300 branded conference bags, provided to us completely free of charge. It’s partnerships like these that truly make a difference!

What advice would you offer to other businesses or charities considering the use of promotional products?

From our experience, incorporating branded items such as t-shirts, pens, and other promotional merchandise into your marketing strategy can yield significant advantages. These items serve as tangible reminders of your brand, keeping it at the forefront of customers’ minds long after initial contact. Whether it’s a branded pen on their desk or a t-shirt they wear regularly, promotional products provide ongoing exposure, reinforcing brand recognition and loyalty.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Hotline for their kindness, generosity, and efficiency in promptly providing us with new patient bags. This gesture not only demonstrates their commitment to supporting our cause but also highlights the power of promotional products in making a meaningful impact.
